Influencer Impact #2: Harvey Milk

This article is part of our Influencer Impact Series. Each week we will be sharing the story of an individual who has used their passion and drive to pursue their life’s calling or a career that has had a lasting effect on an industry and society.

As Pride Month just came to a close, we have chosen an individual for our Influencer Impact who was one of the first politicians to push equality and rights for the LGBTQ community. This influential man was Harvey Milk, and even though his life was taken much too soon, his contributions to the LGBTQ community are still influential today.

Up until 1973, Harvey Milk had lived a quiet and ordinary life in New York. Everything changed for Milk when he moved to the Castro district of San Francisco. From here Harvey Milk became a gay rights activist and politician. For the short 11 months, he was in office, Milk promoted equal rights and his beliefs helped end limits on gay employee rights in California.

Even though Milk’s political ambitions were cut short, his message only became stronger. Harvey Milk has a vision for a better tomorrow filled with more peace and equality. His legacy inspired more activists to surface across the US. Since his death, the LGBTQ community has blossomed, as a new wave of equal rights has emerged and has lead to Pride Month.

“All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential.” – Harvey Milk

Harvey Milk’s life teaches us that it’s never too late to follow your dreams and that everyone deserves the opportunity to be themselves and truly achieve. Whether you discover your passion at 15 or 50, your dreams are still attainable and worth pursuing!!!

That’s it for this week’s Influencer impact. Check back next week for our newest Influencer!!!
