4 Inspiring Quotes to Fuel Your Personal and Professional Journey

As you get started on the journey toward your career after graduation, it always helps to hear the wisdom and insight of people who have trekked along the same (or similar) path.

That’s why, in addition to our recent Vocate post on the seven steps to successful career planning after college, we’ve also put together some inspirational quotes from members of our “Wall of Fame” to help guide recent graduates like you through exploring the different career options you have in front of you.

Remember, inspiration can come from anywhere. So as you find quotes you love – either through this post or in other areas of your life – write them down and put them somewhere you’ll often see them.

#1. “Becoming is better than being.” – Carol Dweck

Carol has come up on this blog a few times before, mostly because she advocates for one skill that’s absolutely critical for successfully finding a career after graduation:

Always maintain a growth mindset.

This quote summarizes that concept perfectly by highlighting that growth and continuous learning is so much more fulfilling than the alternative (a fixed mindset). By continuing to pursue opportunities to “become” something bigger, you’ll inevitably find yourself learning new skills, exploring new challenges, and diversifying your talents to make you more valuable in the workplace and to make your life more fulfilling.

#2. “We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.” – Alan Turing

Alan Turing was a mathematician and logician who is often regarded as the father of the modern computer.

While this quote comes from a paper Turing wrote on his (in)famous “Turing test,” the concept applies nicely to the road recent graduates have in front of them after graduation.

The message is simple. Don’t worry about what your career is going to look like in five or ten years; think about what’s right in front of you and work on making that incredible.

#3. “I try to avoid the ordinary.” – Bill Murray

So should you!

The path to a successful career isn’t formulaic and is rarely ordinary. You should design a career (and life, for that matter) that inspires you by bringing together your skills, passions, and values into something you feel proud to do every day.

#4. “The only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them.” – Michelle Obama

We could have featured any number of different quotes from the former first lady, but this one should resonate the most with recent graduates on the hunt for the right career after graduation.

What Mrs. Obama says here has been iterated in different ways by many, many successful people throughout history, namely, that you are fully in control of your future.

If you can dream it and have the work ethic, you can make it happen.

And when you’re ready to make that leap and start your job search, Vocate is here to help.
